A Trekkie's Dream: Star Trek Legacy xBox 360 Game Review - There haven't been a lot of good Star Trek games out there. Trekkies are more old school; they'd rather watch the show, the movies or go to conventions in Vegas and geek out together. You don't find as many Star Trek fans hunched over their game consoles getting their fix.
So, along comes Star Trek Legacy. The game was designed with the old school trekkie in mind; the look and feel of the game resembles the old TV show. It ties together all the Star Treks through the ages, from Kirk to Picard, more successfully than any attempt has before. The story is complex, and to tell you about it might give some things away. Let's just say that it's an integral part of the game.
Basically, you have to save a Vulcan scientist as your first mission, and in carrying out the mission, you uncover a mystery. It goes from there and the plot thickens, and in the end it all gets tied up. Your enemies have the power to travel through time, which makes things tricky for you. You'll see all your favorite foes here; the Klingons, the Romulans and Borgs.
Unfortunately, you won't see any of your favorite characters. It's a third person space fight game, where you play the Federation Captain and carry out missions. You have to blast your way through the adventure, but it also takes some strategy and careful thinking. It also takes some serious practice learning how to fly your ship. The controls are pretty complicated. You can swivel the ship around in a full 360, but it's tough to end up where you want to. You don't have many landmarks in space, so navigation can be difficult.
You have a command center, where you can view the mission's objectives and a map of the solar system. From there, you can dispatch fleets here and there to engage the enemy. It's kind of like your dashboard, where you can control all the action that's going on and plot your next move.
Star Trek was never just about combat, and Star Trek Legacy isn't either. As captain, you'll be involved in exploration, securing supplies and carefully planning your next move. The story part of the game keeps it interesting.
And don't worry, you have Warp Speed. What Star Trek adventure would be complete without it. Unfortunately, the Warp Speed on Star Trek Legacy looks a little cartoony and unrealistic. Maybe that's part of the design to make it look "retro," like the old series.
You also get to control a variety of Federation ships, including three different Enterprises. The ships look cool, with lots of detail in the graphics, and each has its own special features and abilities.
Star Trek Legacy has a whole bunch of multiplayer modes. You can engage your enemy in a quick space battle, or you can have an all out war with your opponent. The many features you have to choose from make the multiplayer function lots of fun.
