There are many minerals that are necessary to sustain the survival of human beings, and one of those is called zinc. Without it, the body would lose functioning of over 200 enzymatic reactions. Zinc is essential for the growth and development of healthy body tissue.

Zinc also aids in insulin regulation, and is a powerful antioxidant that helps sustain a healthy immune system. It is responsible for sustaining adequate vitamin A levels. And men should pay attention because having enough zinc in your diet ensures that your prostate gland stays in good health.

Signs of zinc deficiency

The following are just a few examples of what a person would experience if he or she was deficient in this mineral:

1. Severe thinning and/or loss of hair.
2. Chronic feelings of fatigue.
3. Inflammation of the skin, also known as dermatitis.
4. Damaged immune system, resulting in chronic colds and flu symptoms.
5. Easily become infected from minor cuts and scrapes.
6. Dramatic loss of libido.
7. Reduction in appetite.
8. And in men, risk of prostate damage.

How to get enough zinc in your diet

Getting enough zinc in your diet from whole food sources should not be too hard since they are abundant in many varieties to choose from. Whole grain breads, nuts, and cereals are great examples of foods that are easy to obtain and are high and zinc. However, the best sources of food that have the most zinc are from beef, chicken, and other meats.

Even seafood, such as fish and shrimp, are great sources of zinc. And if you are a vegetarian then you must be careful about going into a zinc deficiency. Because you choose not to eat meats and fish, be sure to seek out whole grains and plant sources that will help make up your zinc requirements.
