A lot of people are still debating about how a car becomes a vintage car or how it gets its vintage status. Basically, vintage or classic cars are cars that were produced between 1920 and 1950. Cars manufactured between those years are what vintage car enthusiasts call the real classics.
Some people try to categorize car models into eras. Because of this, you will often hear people describe a particular car as part of the muscle car era, the box-type era, the bullet era, and so on. For a more precise classification, cars are put in categories divided in the years that the cars were manufactured.
If you don't know if that old hunk of junk in your dad's garage is worth something or not, here are some guidelines that can help you know whether the old car you have in your possession may be worth something after all or just a worthless piece of junk.
The first way to determine if the car is classic or not is by looking at the year it was manufactured. This is the easiest way to find out if the car you have is a classic or not. Try looking up the car's VIN or Vehicle Identification Number on the internet. You will be able to see the car's details by simply entering the VIN.
The car's "vintage-ness" is also measured by the number of units. Find out how many models of the car you have were manufactured and also how many are still in existence. Mass produced cars that proliferated around the globe can hardly be described as classic or vintage, such as the 90's or 80's Corolla. But, if you find a first generation Corolla, then you might want to get it as it could have some value as only few people today has it.
Relevance is also a point in measuring if the car is considered as vintage or not. In fact, not all old cars are considered to be classic. The car will be considered vintage if the car has represented a generation. For example, the VW Beetle is considered to be a classic even when a lot of people still have it as it has so much history in it. It was very popular back when it was produced and it really did define an era. Even the Type 2 VW Van is considered to be a classic as it represented the hippie generation.
Cars can also be considered vintage if it carries some memories of a particular generation. For example, the Pontiac Trans-Am will always be very popular as it was used in the very popular TV series Knight Rider and will always be seen as KITT.
If you have an old car rotting in your garage, you might want to try taking a look at its history. Who knows? Maybe that old car is considered to be a vintage car and is worth a fortune.
