To idolize a prima ballerina isn't enough to become one yourself. If your kid is into ballet then that is a great start and though everyone is welcome to learn ballet there are certain body types and certain emotional make-ups that make an ideal ballet dancer. There are of course exceptions to the rule but most of the time ballerinas share these qualities. Some ballet companies even hold screening tests that involve physical and mental exercises to make sure that all of their students are cut out for ballet.
The usual physical attributes of a ballet dancer include long arms and legs, a long neck, and a comparatively short torso. Aside from these things being pleasing to the eye, it makes the body movements easier. The general body type should be flexible, slim and strong. Of course dancers can't change their body proportions given by God but through proper training they can tone their other desirable physical characteristics.
Emotional Quotient is also important because perfect physical attributes won't guarantee a successful career in ballet. You have to have a feeling for rhythm and an appreciation and understanding for music. It is much the same as in music, you can't be a singer if you can't carry a tune. Another important trait is being aware of the relationship between objects and space that enables you to move exactly in the right direction.
Ballet dancers also have to be like actors in the sense that they are able to express the right kind of emotion to their dance. Last and probably most important is love for ballet. This love and passion will fuel a ballet dancer to face the challenges of everyday and every performance.
As mentioned earlier, there can be exceptions to the rule but often times the things mentioned should be present in a kid striving make it big in the ballet world. The genetic make-up runs in the family while the emotional aspects are certainly a combination of family and social life.
If your kids have what it takes then by all means support them to achieve their dreams. Now if your kid don't necessarily fit the mold, consult with someone and if you are told that your kid might be more suitable for something else then let go. Ballet is a wonderful art but it isn't the only one.
