What About Sewing?

Many people still don't know it yet, but one of the top ten income-generating home-based and small-scale businesses is sewing.
What may have been thought of earlier as a lowly housewife's hobby, is actually catching up as one of the best means to generate income, be it a full-time or a part-time activity.

Before digging in deeper, let us try to understand first what sewing is all about.

Sewing is the act of stitching fabric, furs, bark, leather, as well as other pliable or flexible materials with the use of a needle and thread.

This practice dates back to the Paleolithic times, around 30,000 BC and predates the weaving of cloth.

People may not be aware of it, but sewing is one of the most universal practices known to man all over the world.

The most common application of sewing is garments and clothing, which is unconsciously one day-to-day items used by man, followed by household furnishings like curtains, bed and table linens, upholstery, table linens, shoes, bags and most other flexible materials.

Household applications for sewing include manual hand-stitching of torn curtains, linens, garments and other household upholstery and clothing, while home-sewing machines make it more convenient to do the jobs.

Industrial applications for sewing include mass production of day-to-day household furnishings and clothing, where sewing is done by complex machines that mass produce clothing products by the thousands and in a shorter period of time.

Many people sew to mend clothes like torn seams or simple button replacements.

Other more complicated mending or sewing problems are usually done by a seamstress, a tailor or a dressmaker.

Advanced and artistic sewing applications, usually for decorations, also include embroidery, quilting, smocking and shirring.

Other aesthetic sewing applications also consider the process as a foundation for most needle arts and crafts like canvas work, appliqu‚ and patchwork.

Although many consider sewing as a lowly task and one that doesn't require much skill, it is a task that is indeed most often contrary to what many people believe.

Sewing is actually a tedious process and one that requires great artistic perspective and precision, especially when it comes to needle arts and handiworks.

Some designs, particularly three-dimensional shapes require adept mathematical skills and calculations to achieve a desired effect.

More so with aligning and applying three-dimensional patterns printed or woven into the fabric material complicates the process.

So who said sewing was a low-skill job? Think again.
