Various Ballet Techniques And Methods

Various ballet techniques are designed to define the unique artistic method by which ballet steps are performed. They are grouped by the country from which they originated like, Russian ballet, French ballet, Italian ballet etc. Generally the various methods of ballet technique represent the historical development of ballet. Throughout the years, there were different ballet training methods that emerged and a number of regional deviations; however, the core technique and language of ballet is the same throughout the World.

Ballet methods are named after the ballet dancer/performer that developed the variation of steps. For instance, two notable ballet techniques from Russia are the Vaganova method after Agrippina Vaganova, and the Legat Method, after Nikolai Legat. The famous Ceccheti method was developed by Enrico Cecchetti, an Italian dancer. The Bournonville method, was named after August Bournonville of Copenhagen who developed the European system based on the teaching methods of Auguste Vestris.

The various ballet methods are as follows:

Balanchine Method

This ballet technique was developed in America by famous choreographer, George Balanchine. This technique is characterized by intense speed, deep plie, with accent on lines, particularly in decale. A student who wants to learn the Balanchine Method should enroll at School of American Ballet, New York City. Balanchine ballet dancer must be extremely fit, tall, slim and flexible.

Bournonville Method

This method was popularized in Royal Danish Ballet by August Bournonville, which features the basic use of arms in preparatoire position. The style has many familiar poses like the pointe derriere, a la taille, with a touch of epaulement.

French Ballet

French ballet is distinguished for their complex beats, with emphasis on precision, elegance and sobriety, and meticulous technical cleanliness.

Cecchetti Method

Russian Ballet

This Russian ballet method was created by Enrico Cecchetti, known for its precise system with careful regard for the classical ballet technique, and seeks to bequeath the dancer's body using unbending training system with balance, poise, strength, elevation, and elasticity. The goal of this method is to let the student learn the dance through internalization of the basic principles and discipline required to be fully independent in performing the dance steps.

Vaganova Method

The Vaganova was founded by Agrippina Vaganova who practiced ballet in Imperial Ballet from 1897 to 1916 and developed a defined technique that includes the development of lower back strength and arm flexibility, and the required endurance for ballet.

Generally, the appropriate ballet technique requires good placement and turnout, clean footwork, polished porte-de-bras, and correct positions and angles. Throughout the years, there are different ballet training methods that emerged and a number of regional deviations; however, the core technique and language of ballet is the same throughout the World.
