Taking care of the elderly may not require a degree like that of doctors and nurses but this does not mean that it should not be taken just as seriously. In fact, when you really think about it, senior care is one of the toughest jobs there is. Not only are you in charge of their well-being, you are also responsible for their health. This is especially true if you are taking care of an elderly person who is too weak to move, has memory lapses and is generally not able to function normally.
This is the reason why education is also important when involved in senior care. Oh you don't have to get a degree. Often times, experience will be enough to get you by. You just need presence of mind and a genuine concern for their well being to survive in the industry. But experience is not something that all caregivers have. If you are just starting in the industry and are starting to gain experience, it is good to also study and have some sort of formal training and internship.
Below are some of the things that every novice in the industry of senior care should have.
1. First Aid
This is one of the most important things that you should know when dealing with the elderly. Remember that you are taking care of someone who is weak and who probably has some sort of illness. You need to have some knowledge of first aid and some CPR just in case something happens.
2. Emergency Procedures
Although this will not be taught to you in any class, you should find a way to learn about it. When inside the hospital or in a senior care facilities, ask around what the emergency procedure is in the establishment. Often, there is a buzzer or a button that will help signal doctors and other medical professionals. If you are at home, caring for the elderly, ask who you should call in case of emergency, where the telephone is and where the emergency numbers are.
3. Medical Procedures And Proper Senior Care Procedures.
Believe it or not, there are proper ways to take care of the elderly and you can learn about this by watching veterans on the job or by attending formal training courses. These training classes will teach you on how to properly feed them, walk them, bathe them and help them with their bowel movements. There will also be some classes that will help you deal with their tantrums and their differing personalities.
