Sewing was once a skill done by hand. When the sewing machine was invented, it made the job much easier. The difference with this machine compared to others is that the user has to use both the hands and the feet.
The most important part of this machine is the foot presser. This is because it helps guide the material under the needle and over the face plate. In fact, this has been built in to most models on the market and if you aren't happy stepping on it, perhaps it is time to have it replaced.
You should replace the sewing machine foot presser if it can only be used for straight or just regular zigzag stitching. Ideally, it should be able to do both and you can check on this by reading the manual. If you are content having to replace one foot with another, keep the first foot nearby so you can replace it easily.
If it has to be replaced, place the new foot under the center of the shank then lower the presser foot lever. Next, fit the shank over the center pin on the presser foot as you lower.
You should push the presser foot screw down firmly until you hear it snap into place. You should do this carefully as your fingers will be moving in the direction of the needle. Since the new foot presser needs time to break in, just lower the shank and press down quick foot changes.
Before you step on the presser, make sure to raise the needle to the highest point by turning the hand wheel towards you. This keeps the needle raised and the thread in proper tension.
You should always raise the presser foot with the lifter. If you can't find it, look at the back of the machine.
While pulling on the presser foot seems to be the logical choice to remove it, the only thing you have to do is push the tow of the foot up in order for it to snap off.
There are three types of foot pressers. The narrow stitch foot that is used to stitch in the ditch, the zipper foot used for installing zippers and the special open toe foot that is used for embroidery applications. You might think that using the right one is very complicated when in reality it isn't. You just have to get used to it.
