Ballet performances rely a lot on its dancers and how they are able to interpret the language of the music that they are dancing to through their moves. That is why music is the foundation of each act because it sets the mood for everybody who is involved in the production.
Original Music
In any creation, it would be best if you could present something new, something that has never been seen before, or in terms of music, something that has never been heard before. This could also add to the success of the show because it can pull many audiences, especially those who are in search of something fresh.
But only the big ballet companies can afford to pay for somebody to compose the original score for a performance, and there are only few of them that exist. For the main reason that original music is more costly that producers of ballet performances opt to use music that already exists.
Existing Music
To lessen the production cost, the choreographer may decide on using existing music or something which they can use for free because it no longer has copyright protection.
This choice is just as brilliant because what really matters in executing a powerful act in this type of art is the choreography or how the people involved in it interpret the sound score.
Everything Starts In An Idea
Before coming up with an act, ballet choreographers need an idea. This may come from something they've personally experienced then later search for the perfect music to fit the mood. The person in charge may also listen to the music first and then choreograph the whole act depending on what emotions and scenarios that the chosen music will invoke to whoever hears it.
Popular Choices
There are composers who wouldn't write scores for ballet performances in fear that the producers would ask them to change something from their work depending on the need of the act wherein it would be used.
But there is music available from the earlier times which were written exclusively for ballet. The list goes as Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird, Petrouchka. The Rite of Spring, Orpheus and Agon. The following composers and their compositions are also a hit in this type of dance. These are Aaron Copland, Maurice Ravel, Sergei Prokofiev and Leo Delibes.
Music is vital in any ballet performance. This is the life of the show and this will greatly affect the performances of everybody involved in the act.
