Upon seeing the leaps and twists that ballet dancers do in their performances, the illusion that they defy gravity is what comes to mind. But how such acts can be executed when we all know that defying gravity, in the settings of the performers, is next to impossible?
The Physics Behind The Act
Watching ballet may sometimes seem surreal especially with the untrained eyes. But this is no magic, everything in it and that it projects has a scientific explanation to back it up. Scientific explanation along with the understanding that every performer on the set has gone through the proper training to be able to execute just the right kind of illusion.
When performing ballet, the center of the dancer can be compared to a ball when it is thrown. Any thing when hurled will automatically be acted upon by the gravitational pull of the Earth.
The human body, though, has a limited capability of calculating its center of mass when it is leaping through the air, thus the dancer, in this position, extends his/her arms and also the legs in midair. By doing so, the center of the mass of the weight coming from the legs is being lifted in relation to the dancers head. That is why the upper torso as well as the head of the ballet dancer, at this point, appears to be afloat.
The illusion is further being enhanced by the spectators focus on the dancers face and his/her upper body that they don't easily notice the dancers legs coming in an upward position then stopping in a split position.
Ballon
This term is used in reference to the dancers aptitude in what looks to be freezing their position when they are in mid air.
This holds similar with a Pas de Chat wherein quick movements of the dancers feet, knee and hips will eventually give the illusion that even for a jiffy, the dancers are suspended in air.
The Perfect Landing
But in every leap, the dancers have to be ready with the accompanying fall. Thus should be perfected as to avoid any ugly repercussions. The ideal fall lies not only on the performers but on their setting as well. The floor of the stage is one big helpful solution for such because it takes the shock.
This is also the reason why the dancers, when they are about to do the landing after a leap, bend their knees and execute a roll of their feet which is from their toes to heels.
Every move, stillness, leap and fall in ballet justifies the idea of why professional training and mentorship is required for those who want to try this type of dance.
