The History Of Ballet

Ballet is an art because each person is trained to move their body in unnatural ways in order to tell a story. It takes a lot of practice to become one of the best in the industry doing all the spins and leaps that not everyone can do.

The history of ballet dates back to the Renaissance period in Europe. Originally, such performances acted as an intermission number in between opera scenes.

The first ballet was the Comique de la Reine in France in 1581. Years later, this country became known as the ballet capital of the world. During the reign of King Louis XIV, he founded the Royal Academy of Dancing. Other countries followed suit with their own dance companies like the Russian Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg.

Before the Nutcracker became a hit, ballets of the time revolved upon Greek mythology. Through the years, writers started coming up with other stories. From corsets, masks and wigs, new things were added such as heeled shoes, hoopskirts and leotards.

Most dancers start out when they are young. As the years go by and their bodies are no longer able to perform like they used to, they soon become choreographers and impart to the younger generation their experiences and skills to keep up with tradition. It should be pointed out that many of the famous choreographers today were once dancers.

Some of the best include Anna Pavlova, Alicia Alonso, Briely Movric, Paloma Herrera and Vaslav Nijinsky. In the US, beginners can learn the basics in a dance studio which offers summer intensive courses or full year lessons starting from the age of 3.

If you are good enough and want to pursue this further, you can try out and enter the American Repertory Ballets Princeton Ballet School, the School of American Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet School and others that offer professional training beginning at 9 years of age.

The key to enable dancers to perform perfectly is the shoes which are called ballet shoes or slippers. They are made of canvas, leather or satin that makes the dance movements possible without causing any injuries to the dancer.

You should do research before buying a pair of ballet shoes. You can get a durable one from Block, Capezio, Danshuz, Gamba, Grishko, Leo, Patterson or Sansha. The rest of the attire like the skirt and the leotard are easy to find so you will know if you can become a great dancer in the future.
