The Ballet Shoes

In ballet, the success of the dancers performance depends on his/her comfort in executing each move that he/she has to do.

In this art form, the dancers shoe is so important that it is part of the craft. The shoe and the profession coincides. The triumph of the art form depends a lot on the dancer and the shoe.

Old Pointe Shoe

The old pointe shoe lasted only for one performance. The dancers would opt to replace it after an act than to suffer injuries if they continued to use such.

In the early years, the pointe shoes were poorly made. They didn't have protection to the feet and ankles of the dancers who used them.

For this reason, the dancers were prone to feet injuries such as stress fractures, black nails and tendonitis. About 80 percent of the professional dancers, during the old days, injured their ankles.

Pads were being used by the dancers to try to alleviate the pain during those times. But because of this, the shoes become too thick and caused loud thumping sounds when the dancer landed after a leap.

The noise being created because of the shoe made the performance look not as swift and even seemed hard because the dancers appeared to be heavier than they really were. This technically negates the performance and may contribute to the failure of the people involved in the act to give their best.

Because the dancers wanted their shoes to hold onto its place, they tie ribbons on their ankles, in crossed position, to keep the shoes in the ideal position which is full-pointe. Aside from ribbons, elastics were also used during those times.

Those old pointe shoes from famous ballerinas and were autographed have been highly prized in auctions and are being cherished like possessions.

The New Pointe Shoe

Thanks to technology, today's ballerinas don't have to mind comfort because today's versions of the pointe shoe gives them just that. No longer do they have to rely on creativity to keep the shoes in place because the new point shoe allows the dancer to stand and dance on tiptoe for a long period of time.

But even though the shoes are made for a perfect fit, the person who will use them should have still undergone the proper training to be able to execute moves and stances that would allow them to excel in the craft.

In ballet, children are being discouraged to dance on pointe. Everybody in the field must first go through the required education before they can actually pick the shoe that fits.
