Ballet, just like everything, has a past, a history that made something colorful in ancient times and rich in the present.
The very first ballet performance was done well over 500 years ago. During those times, men took the lead roles while women weren't given much challenging choreography as they were perceived to be weak. Some ballet movements were even based on historical happenings and stories from the bible.
For all these reasons, you should no longer wonder why every performance of such type of dance elicits deep emotions and how one could be affected by the dance.
Ballet In The 15th Century
During the Renaissance Italy, ballets were performed as form of court entertainment. It was only available to be viewed by the aristocrats and those who held high positions in society. Those are the people who were deemed to be the only ones that could appreciate such an art.
Ballet In The 16th Century
In 1547, the Queen of France, Catherine de Medicis, commences in the French court to the art form that she was able to see in Italy. Balthasar de Beaujoveux, whom de Medicis brought along to come with her to France as her chief musician, created Le Ballet comique de la Reine that other people deem as the first ballet.
The Le Ballet comique de la Reine runs for more than five hours which combines dance, music and scenery, plus special effects and spoken dialogues even about the myth of Circe in the ancient Greece.
Ballet In The 17th Century
The first ballet academic school was founded in France by Louis XIV in 1661. It is named as the l'AcadTmie Royale de Danse. Its sole purpose at the time was to train dancers only for the kings entertainment. In 1670, Pierre Beauchamps invented the five ballet position known now to be classic and basic of all ballet techniques. He introduced it to the Academie.
These were the foundation of the continuous growth of the art form as time goes by.
To date, ballet is slowly becoming known not only as art for the elite but is slowly creeping into the pop market as well. Improvements are showing through the costumes, shoes, music and the extravagant and even high tech design of the performances venue.
But no matter what development has been showing through time in the field, the most important thing that the people involved in it should be aware of is proper training and the avoidance of injuries in executing the routines involved.
Ballet is such a classical kind of dance. We can only hope that it continues to make its mark in the field for such art to flourish even more.
