Some Possible Causes Of Sudden Hair Loss

This article will look at some possible causes of sudden hair loss. If you are experiencing sudden hair loss you should be aware that it may be a sign of an underlying disease. Most of the time, hair loss is hereditary and is harmless. However, certain diseases may cause you to lose your hair.

Lupus is a long term, autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks normal body tissues as if they were foreign substances. This will cause inflammation and tissue damage throughout the body. It can affect the hair, causing it to become brittle and to fall out in patches. Short broken hairs, called lupus hairs, commonly appear above the forehead. Hair loss from lupus is usually not permanent.

Thyroid problems are a common cause of hair loss. An overactive thyroid or an under active thyroid gland can cause hair loss. Fortunately, hair loss can easily be reversed by proper treatment of the thyroid disease.

Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph system. The lymph system is a network that carries lymph fluid, nutrients and waste material between the body tissues to protect a person against disease. The stress of the cancer itself or the treatments for the cancer or a combination of both may cause you to lose your hair.

Sarcoidosis is a disease that causes inflammation and scar tissue throughout the body, including the scalp. Symptoms of sarcoidosis may include fever, body aches, swelling of the lymph glands, a reddish rash on the face, painful joints and numbness. When scar tissue is formed on the scalp, hair cannot grow.

Diabetes is a big cause of hair loss in a lot of people. Diabetes is a hormone related disorder that will often lead to thinning hair or hair loss. The hair loss will normally begin at the onset of diabetes and gradually gets worse as the disease progresses. Therefore, if you have noticed an increased amount of hair loss, see your doctor. Get tested for diabetes. Early detection can decrease the damage done to your body.

Diseases of the pituitary gland can cause hair loss. The pituitary gland is a small gland located at the base of the brain. It produces the hormones that help control many body processes. Since hair loss is largely associated with hormones, it is easy to see that if something is wrong with one of the biggest producing hormone glands in our body, hair loss will be a result.

Certain types of medications may cause sudden hair loss. Blood thinners, medications for gout, medications used in the treatment of cancer, birth control pills and antidepressants have all been linked to sudden hair loss.

Fungal infections of the scalp will cause sudden hair loss also. This is easily treatable with the right anti-fungal medication.

These are just a few of the causes of sudden hair loss. Your hair can be a good indicator of a hidden health problem. See your doctor right away if you start experiencing sudden hair loss.
