Skateboarding Tricks: How To Ollie?

After learning how to push yourself, ride properly, and get comfortable on the skateboard, you are probably thinking of learning your first trick. What would it be? I suggest you learn the ollie first. Why? Not because the name sounds cool but because ollie is the foundation of almost all skateboarding tricks including the kickflip, pop-shove it, and heelflip.

Ollie, in simplest terms is jumping and getting your skateboard off the ground without grabbing. The trick is also known as the no hands aerial. You can either perform it while moving or standing still. If you are a beginner, practice the ollie stationary.

1. Stand on your skateboard with your front foot between the middle of the deck and the front trucks. Place your back foot in a way that the ball of your foot is standing on the skateboard's tail. This feet position works for most people but if you think you can do the trick better with other position, go for it.

2. Once you are in the "olleing" stance, bend your knees and body down. This will give you the momentum when you pop up into the air. Kick the tail of your skateboard and let it hit the ground while maintaining your position. As it hits the ground, jump into the air. This part is crucial. You need to have a perfect timing when doing this.

3. Pull your back foot up into the air and let the tail rebound off the floor. The rebound will give the skateboard its height.

4. As you jump, control the board with your front foot. Roll your foot slightly inward so that your toes touch the surface of the board. Drag your front foot's toes up to the front trucks and return your front foot into its original position.

5. Now, it is time to level out and land. Pull your knees as high as you can. When the nose of the board reaches its apex, place your front foot in a way that when you land, your front foot is standing directly on to of the front trucks. Your back foot can either wait for the tail of the board to reach its apex or follow the movement of the tail as it goes up but ensure that the back foot will stand on top of the trucks when you land. Your feet should be leveled at this time.

6. Finally. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Learning this trick takes a lot of discipline and practice.
