Screening Senior Health Care Facilities

Your loved ones are some of the most important people in your life. When the time comes and they need special care and attention, it is important to have them sent to a good senior health care facility. Although it sounds difficult to do, the fact is inevitable.

It is crucial to contemplate sending your loved one to a nursing home. But instead of thinking on the negative side, try to remember that you are doing this for their own sake. A nursing home or a senior health care facility is a convalescent institution the focuses mainly on seniors who no longer require hospitalization and who can no longer be cared for at home.

Once you have made the final decision of sending your loved one to a senior health care facility, the next hard part to make is how to find the best facility that falls right into your price range while still ensuring you that your loved one obtains safe and comfortable care. It is important then that you know what type of facility to look for and what essential questions to ask to assure that you have made the right choice.

How Much Are You Willing To Spend?

This is the first determining factor when finding the right nursing home. There are a lot of senior health care facilities that offer alternatives that are often very expensive. Most of these facilities require you to shell out huge sums of money. In fact, paying for a senior health care facility is somewhat like buying a condominium unit and then paying for monthly fees for housekeeping, maintenance, etc.

Check For Cleanliness

Once you have determined the facility that you want, the next thing to consider is the cleanliness. Use your nose and your eyes in evaluating the cleanliness of possible senior health care facilities. Be wary of dust and dirt as seniors are very sensitive to that. Observe how the facility provides cleaning. Sloppy cleaning simply gives an indication as to the type of care the facility provides.

Additionally, incontinence accidents sometimes happen in a facility. Make sure you find no signs of these accidents. Assure yourself that the mess is not just covered up but properly cleaned up as well.

Also, be wary about strong perfume smells as this could mean the facility is covering up something. If the facility prepares the meals, request for a tour of the kitchen. You can also seek for inspection reports from the local health department.

Falls

Falls and injuries that lead to fractures can somehow shorten the life of seniors and even decrease their quality of like. Senior health care and retirement facilities should take precautionary measures in preventing these accidents. Check for handrails along the hallways. No throw rugs should be visible and if the facility is using carpet, it must have a low pile so that your loved one can easily walk.

Senior facilities should also be free from any obstacles and clutter. Grab bars should be available in the baths, and there should also be easy access for wheelchairs and walkers. Also, call bells have to be in strategic spots in time for emergencies. Fire escapes and smoke detectors should also be present. Finally, be cautioned against health care facilities allowing their residents to smoke right inside their own rooms.

Professional Care

Medical personnel should always be present twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to attend to any possible emergency situations. On-call medical professional care is a big no-no. Remember that precious time can possibly be lost if there is no immediate emergency care available.

Activities

Make sure that you go for senior health care facilities that have a full calendar of activities for its residents. Inactivity and loneliness can lead to mental decline of seniors. If possible, a senior health care facility should have a full time, in-house activity director.

Personal Comfort

A senior health care facility should have the proper heated and air conditioning system. Make sure that these are available in the facility. Also, ask if it is possible for you to bring in personal furnishings. This will help the transition of your loved ones easier.

Before you send your loved ones to a senior care facility, make sure that you have evaluated all the necessary things. Make sure that they find the place comfortable and convenient.
