3. Wash your hands and get your insulin ready. It is important to make sure that your hands are sanitary and that the syringe you are using is clean. Many people reuse the same syringes without any problems by cleaning them off with rubbing alcohol. However, if you are currently sick or have any type of open wounds on your hands, then it is best to start fresh with a new needle.
4. Before extracting the insulin from the insulin bottle, do a quick check of the expiration date and avoid using the insulin if it is old. Also, if there is any kind of discoloration or if you see any type of small bits of matter floating around, then discard the insulin immediately. The color of rapid and short-acting insulins should be clear. If you are using this type of insulin and the color has changed or is cloudy, then this insulin is bad and should be thrown out. On the other hand, if you are using intermediate-acting insulin then the color should actually be a little cloudy.
