Old To New Only With Sewing Skills

What do we usually do with old T-shirts? We often give them away to charity or simply use them as rags. But these aren't the only things we could do with T-shirts. With sewing skills, we could do a lot more to these old shirts to make them look brand new.

T-shirts are usually made out of heavy cotton that is colorfast which allows them to be dyed with different colors. Moreover, they also contain prints or images on the front and back. This may seem a barrier to a novice sewer but not to a professional and creative sewer.

A creative sewer can transform this T-shirt that may sometimes have a boring print into various sewing projects. One sewing project that could recycle T-shirts is the T-shirt quilt. In making a quilt, you first need to gather T-shirts. You could gather them according to a theme such as T-shirts form band tours or promotions. Then you could piece them together to make a specific quilt. You could also get T-shirts from all the members of your family and make a memorial quilt.

Following the gathering process is the actual making of a quilt. Making a T-shirt quilt is similar to making any other quilt. You need to make blocks from the T-shirts. These should be of the same size and shape. Then you piece them together. This might seem relatively easy however an experienced quilter would be best for this type of sewing project.

Under garments could also be made out of old T-shirts. The fabric characteristics allow cotton T-shirts to be used in underwear. Moreover, the patterns and the prints on your shirt may even make your undergarment more interesting than you expected.

You can also make a baby or a toddlers dress out of T-shirts. In this type of T-shirt recycling project, you will need to combine an adult T-shirt with a baby T-shirt. You might also be surprised to know that adult T-shirts can also be transformed into a pair of toddler pants. You can use an existing pair of pants as a template.

Aside from dresses and pants, you can make T-shirt dresses out of your old shirts. Just attach a skirt to the shirt and see how you transformed it to a simple dress. The skirt you would attach could be of any length or style. This project has tons of possibilities.

Old T-shirts need not be given away or be used as rags. These shirts have other possibilities since they can be transformed into something new. All you need to have are your sewing materials, sewing machine and creativity.
