Natural Beauty? Not As Natural As You Think

When models appear on television or in magazines, they are often given what is called a "natural" look. In other words, these beauties appear to wear little or no makeup in order to connect with the everyday look of the target audience. It's no secret that these models actually work with teams of make-up artists, and are simply done up to seem as though they look beautiful when they step out of bed in the morning. To achieve the same look, we buy cosmetics, many times the ones these "natural" beauties were advertising. However, in the fashion industry, the word natural also has a different meaning-it is a word we associate with fresh, safer, and organic types of products. Because everyone in today's world is focused on being more environmentally friends, many cosmetics companies have lines of natural make-up.

But is this so-called natural make-up really safe? If you read the label on the back of your "natural" face wash or "natural" toner, you might see loads of chemical-sounding words that you can't pronounce. Natural doesn't always mean natural these days, so you have to be careful that you're getting what you're paying for. This is especially true because products that are marked as natural are usually more expensive than other cosmetics.

The problem lies with regulating laws. "Natural" is a term that can be used by companies with little truth-the laws regulating advertising a product as natural are few and far between. Natural products may have a natural element. For example, the lipstick that you are using might contain some plants that were grown organically-that is, without the use of chemicals. The advertisers put this fact on the package, ignoring the fact that the plants, once back at the lab, are mixed with a number of synthetic (or, man made) ingredients as well.

So how can you tell if a product is really natural? Simple-flip over the box. Thousands of synthetic ingredients are used in make-up, and by finding natural products we can be sure that we are taking good care of our skin. If your product contains fragrance, lanolin, mineral oil, sodium hydroxide, talc, or products that you can't even pronounce, you shouldn't believe its "natural" label. If you have any questions, a professional can help you further weed out the good products from the bad ones. If you want natural products, you should be able to find them-not be stuck with products posing as natural!
