Some people collect stamps, some people collect shoes, some people collect cigarettes and some collect comic books. Everybody has their own preferences; their collection is their source of pride and joy. But with comic book collecting, you have a hobby and passion that transcends age, race and culture.
Comic books have long been associated with the young. But in the past decades, when the baby boomers were first enamored and connected with the comic book collecting upsurge have grown up. Comic book collections have been in high demand causing them to dramatically rise in value.
Today, comic books and collections of them can bring someone a fortune. One rare issue alone that is in good condition can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars. The key word here is good condition. Mint or near mint condition means that there are no or very minimal flaws.
As a general rule, for a comic book to be in mint condition, it has to look like it just came off the press. There should be no bends, scratches, torn pages or writings. But, for some people, one type of writing can make the issue even more valuable, and that is a signature.
In the comic book world, artists and authors are the big stars. Comic book conventions have stood as witnesses on how long queues have snaked around the venue as fans line up to get the autographs of the big names in comicbookdom. The signature of the artist on his work is certainly a great addition to a collection, much like Hollywood memorabilia being signed by the actor or a baseball being signed by Babe Ruth.
Finding the artist or author you like can be a bit difficult. Going to their office may not be a good idea. People just don't want to be bothered in their work place. So the best place to find them would be at comic book conventions, especially the major ones.
Try to do some research on the comic cons that are happening near your area. Usually, the events and guests are listed long before the conventions occur. So you can check out if the author or artist you want will be there. Sometimes though, some of them just pop in unannounced so don't be dismayed if you don't see their name on the list.
Never lose hope, the search for the elusive autograph is just part of comic book collecting. Just be patient and vigilant and you will have that autograph you have always wanted.
