When it first came out in June 2007, Apple's Iphone seemed to hold the promise of becoming the next evolution of the cellular telephone. It promised to blend the best features of three handy gadgets that have become essential in modern day society; the Ipod, PDAs, and Cellular Telephones. However, the Iphone has fallen short of user expectations, and unless Apple takes steps to correct these problems based on user feedback, the Iphone could become another footnote in gadget history.
Touch Interface Can Be Inconvenient
One of the user complaints is that the Iphone's interface is a touch sensitive screen that uses ONLY skin contact to register an entry. The original intent was to make a stylus unnecessary, but the end result is a bit of inconvenience for users, who NEED to use their bare fingers to operate the Iphone. This naturally makes it difficult to use with greasy or dirty hands, and impossible when wearing gloves.
No Upgrade Options For Memory Or Batteries
Another user complaint is that the Iphone's battery is similar to most Ipods, meaning it is an internal battery that the user can't replace, and MUST take back to an Apple shop to have it replaced when it expires. Right alongside this issue is the fact that the Iphone's storage capacity comes in only two brackets, 4 and 8 gigabytes. The memory, like the battery, is built into the system and can't be replaced by users. In a world where memory sticks/cards for upgrades to MP3 players and cellular phones are all the rage, this is a huge disadvantage for the Iphone.
Online Incompatibility Issues
A third category that often sees user complaints is the internet aspect of the Iphone. It boasts Wifi capability, but unfortunately also supports AT&T's EDGE technology, which despite upgrades to their transmission system remains extremely slow. The browser used is safari, which has a decent and stable platform, but the Iphone doesn't support Flash and Java, limiting the browsing options of Iphone users.
Not A Good Phone For Mainstream Cell Phone Users
Lastly, the Iphone lacks certain features that are mainstays in most modern cellular telephones. These missing features include bluetooth file transfer capability and bluetooth transmission of sound files to an audio player, GPS capability, and even the simple ability to program MP3s and set them as ring/SMS tones. Ultimately, while the Iphone has many features that modern cellular phones lack, this inattention to details which have become comfortable and convenient for most users may spell the Iphone's downfall unless they are corrected soon.
