How The The GPS Network Works

Consumer reports show that more and more people in the United States are relying on GPS. This device is so good that it pinpoints accurately to within a few feet the place where you want to go.

GPS stands for global positioning system. Initially developed by the department of defense, it is used by all branches of the military, which later on included law enforcement agencies. It was only in the 80's that the US government decided that it could be used by the public.

The GPS network is made of three things namely the satellites, earth monitoring stations and the receivers.

There are currently 24 satellites orbiting the earth. These work on the principle of triangulation thus revealing the exact location of the user. Despite this technological wonder, there are times that the natural landscape may block such signals rendering the device useless.

Next is the GPS earth monitoring station. There are currently 4 unmanned stations and 1 master station operating in the US. Those working in the master station receive information from the four and update them regularly so people will always have the necessary data while on the move.

Lastly, is the receiver. This hand held device can be placed on the hood of the car and carried around after disembarking the vehicle. If the unit is able to get signals from three satellites in orbit, it can tell the user the longitude and latitude where you are. This means those that that receive data from four or more will get more information.

The device, which fits right into your hands, is available in most electronic stores. Some websites have promos so it is possible to get a discount. The customer should check the benefits and features of the product and compare it with others before making a decision.

The GPS network can be used in any part of the globe. Users in the US will be happy to know that the unit comes with a few preprogrammed maps including that of Canada and Mexico. Those who are planning to travel abroad like in Europe or Asia will have to upload new information from the computer so it can be brought along.

Some manufacturers have special accessories that can be hooked up to the device. This includes a charger for the car or one that can be hooked into the outlet because it would be bad if it dies when you need it the most.
