How Do You Sew A Button

Sewing is easy and anybody can learn how to do it. You not only cut fabric and stitch it together but you also have to learn how to sew a button.

The first thing you have to do is find buttons that match the garment you are working on. You can find these in specialty stores. You will notice that there are two types. There is the sew-thru that has two or four holes and the shank which has a pierced protrusion on the back side.

Those being sold in stores are plain and very affordable. Designer buttons on the other hand are much different because they also add beauty to the outfit.

Aside from looking for the right button, you also have to find the right thread. Again, this should also match the color of the fabric. You should also prepare the needle and the scissors that you will be using.

The thread should be inserted into the eye of the needle. That is the small hole located on the top. The best way to do this is to take a double strand of thread, tie a knot at its end and then insert the thread into the needle.

The next step is to locate the position on the fabric where the button will be placed. You should remember that there must be equal distance between one button and the next and it should run parallel to the corresponding buttonholes.

You don't put the button over the area then sew it in. It is best to make a couple of stitches first on the fabric to act as an anchor.

You should make 3 or 4 stitches to fasten the button into place if you are using a sew-thru button. Shank buttons are a little different because you have to fasten it to the garment by running the thread through the hole in the shank.

In both cases, you have to secure the button and the garment by winding it with the thread and then tying the knot. If you were able to put one button into place, it won't be that hard to work on the others.

Now that you know how to sew a button, you can show the new outfit to your friends. This will also be very useful when one of your buttons accidentally pops off so you can wear it once again.
