Handling Denial While Caring For Seniors

Senior care can be a very challenging task. Most of the time, the difficulties may come from handling the elderly themselves. There are times when some older people just won't accept that they can't do things by themselves.

Although old age may have crept on them, they still don't believe that they might need some assistance in doing most day to day tasks. Some may feel it coming. But there are some older people that may be in the denial stage.

Self-denial is actually a common problem in caring for older people. Aging is a time of change. At most times, the elderly may not like to experience the changes and what they might bring. This will lead them to develop a form of self-denial over the changes that are happening to them. The same type of denial may also happen to people who have gone through a debilitating illness or condition which requires drastic changes made in their lifestyle.

The denial stage that some older people may go through because of the changes can be very frustrating for care givers. There are two different ways in which older people may exhibit denial especially when it comes to requiring the services of a care giver. Denial may be brought about by dementia or certain memory lapses or an inability to follow a series of steps. Some may deny being in a situation that they may need some assistance.

A caregiver may either show them their mistakes to help make them realize their condition. But it can be very depressing for them to go through. Caregivers can instead try to agree with them and try to let their wards think of other things. Being agreeable with their denial at times can help them slowly accept the changes that they have to make, one that may require the assistance of a care giver.

Another form of denial that older people may show comes from those who are limited physically but are still in the right frame of mind. This type of denial may spring from not accepting the fact that they have become weak physically. It mostly comes from pride that keeps them from accepting the changes. It can be up to the care giver to help them realize that they must accept this. But before that, the care givers must first be able to help get through the denial that many elderly people might feel. A bit of understanding is needed in dealing with these kind of issues in senior care.
