Doing The Oil Change By Yourself

Surely, this ones a toughie. Not so many people can do this job and get out clean. Most probably because they are doing it all wrong. Changing your oil is like changing a baby's diaper, or maybe not. But one things certain. You have to be extra careful with every step so the process won't go into disaster.

The most important thing that you have to take mental note of is to work when the engine is cool. So let your cars engine rest for a couple of minutes till the surfaces temperature is bearable. You could get a second or third degree burn if you ignore this warning.

Assemble all materials before starting. Be sure that you are parked safely in one corner where the ground is leveled. In cases of spills, you would want to put something below the engine where you anticipate the spill would take place. Cardboard boxes are very convenient when it comes to this.

The things that you might need are:

- Newly Bought Oil And Oil Filter

- A Couple Of Wrenches

- Funnel

- Container Where You Can Put Your Used Oil

- Piece Of Cloth Or Clean Piece Of Rag

Step 1:

You have to get yourself underneath your car to get a better view of the oil pan. The oil pan is found at the bottom most part of your engine. Once you see the drain plug that is attached to the oil pan, get the container.

Step 2:

Put the oil container just below the drain plug. Be sure that it will be able to catch every ounce of oil that will be spilled in it.

Step 3:

Open the plug and let all the oil flow through it. Drain it all out. Once everything is out, put the plug back and tighten it. If you don't know what to do with the used oil, you could drop by your nearest gas station and leave it there.

Step 4:

Now that the oil is out of the way, its time for you to pour on the new one. If you see a rubber gasket at the end of your cars oil filter, lubricate it then screw the new filter. Fill the filters with the new oil but do not let it overflow. Use up at least 80% of the filter space.

Step 5:

Screw the oil filter in an upright position. Don't forget that you're holding a full container so carefully handle it to avoid spills. All you need to do now is pour the cars engine with oil through a funnel.
