Does Vitamin E Have Side Effects?

This article will educate you on Vitamin E side effects. Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that is present in many foods that we consume each day, especially fats and oils. It is a one of several vitamins known as an antioxidant that helps prevent damage from the breakdown and release of certain toxic by- products of infection or food digestion. Many people take vitamin E supplements to protect against heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

A vitamin E deficiency is rarely seen in a healthy person. However, people who are unable to absorb fat or people with pancreatitis or diseases of the gall bladder may experience vitamin E deficiency and need a supplement. But be aware that too much vitamin E can be dangerous.

One of the most dangerous side effects of vitamin E would be an allergic or anaphylactic reaction. If you start taking vitamin E and experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat of face or if you break out in hives, stop taking the drug immediately. It may even require a visit to the emergency room if the reaction is serious enough.

There are other side effects that are less serious and may develop over time. Make your doctor aware if you start to experience any of the following:

- Weakness or fatigue
- Headache or blurred vision
- Nausea
- Diarrhea or excessive flatulence.

Vitamin E can also interact with a lot of commonly prescribed drugs. Make sure that your doctor knows that you are taking vitamin E and ask him if it will interact with any of your current medicines. It is important to note that vitamin E should not be taken along with Warfarin. Since Warfarin and vitamin E are both blood thinners, taking them simultaneously can increase your risk of bleeding and a possible hemorrhage.

Always make sure that you carry a list of all the medicines that you take, including vitamins and supplements, with you at all times. You never know when you will be in a situation where you need emergency treatment and are unable to speak for yourself. Your list of medicines can speak for you. It will tell your allergies, what type of chronic diseases you may have and it will also prevent the healthcare provider from giving you a drug that may interact with your current medications or supplements.

Vitamin E has many health benefits and studies have shown it to be effective in preventing many conditions and helping to manage many others. But, do keep in mind that you should follow the recommended dose. Just because you can buy this supplement over the counter, does not mean that it is completely safe. Remember, everything in moderation. Taking a higher dose does not mean that you will get better faster. Be more responsible for your health. Learn all you can about the medicines that you take and about any vitamins or herbal supplements. If you are taking vitamin E, learn all about vitamin E side effects. It could save your life.
