Well, basically that's true, but through the course of its existence, comic books have grown more deep and dark catering to the younger adults with stories and plots becoming more complicated and intense.

If you want your child to have their own comic book collection, then its certain that you want their collection to be something they can understand, something they can enjoy, and most definitely, something they will treasure. Stick with the good old superheroes from before. They were based on a concept when kids where the principal target market of the publishers. Basically, they were created to be good and to fight evil. Their values are still intact and are more inclined to be clean.

Read some of the plots and the usual storyline that the character goes through. After a few comic books, you will be able to judge for yourself whether the comic book is appropriate for your child.
Do some research. Many established comic book publishers nowadays produce children line products which can introduce kids to the world of reading and comic book appreciating. You can choose which one will appeal most to your child as you know them better than anybody else.
Take the time to visit comic book stores and talk to the staff. They know what most kids are reading nowadays. They can let you check out the series and see for yourself if they are good for kids.

Starting them young in reading comic books is not a disaster. In fact, because of comic books, your child may develop a fondness for reading. Just be sure to guide your child at his or her first stab at comic book collecting.
