Your friends preference in comic books would come in handy to know as well. If you think that he loves action and mystery then batman can be a good choice. In fact, big character names are a good and safe choice. Try to listen when he babbles on about his collection, you will get bits of information on his preferences on the comic books he reads.
Remember, you don't have to spend a fortune just to make your friend happy. Comic book collecting to some may be an investment, but first and foremost it is a fun and pleasurable form of entertainment.
