What makes the great difference in the performance of a skateboard are the wheels and the bearings underneath it. Many pro skaters modify theirs and have perfectly tuned trucks and bearings. At this stage, you don't have to buy the technically advanced gears. Ask for recommendations from the specialty store and see which they will recommend. If they keep on insisting that you get the expensive ones, then they are out to squeeze you of your money.
Fancy looking wheels may look great, but they can be pricier. Medium sized wheels are perfect for learning and they should be worn out if you practice hard. So getting the least expensive wheels would be advisable for you.
Trucks and bearings though last a long time so if you can afford it, then finding durable trucks and bearings would be good. Even if you break your board and you wear out your wheels, you may still be able to use your trucks and bearings on a new board.
Lastly, skateboarding is also about safety. Aside from the board, you should highly consider getting effective safety gear as well.
