Most beginners start ballet at a young age. Although not everyone will become a professional dancer later on, this is an enriching experience that they will always remember.
Before class begins, the instructor will probably tell you to get the right attire. This is usually composed of a leotard, tights and slippers. If you have no idea where to buy them, the instructor will usually recommend where you can get them so the next time you come the studio, you are ready to go.
When you walk into a store, ask what material it is made of. The best materials are either fine leather or suede because this allows the student to feel their feet every time they touch the floor. You should also examine the workmanship. This could be factory made or hand stitched. The important thing is that this is tight and secure.
As a beginner, you should also check if the sole can be flexed because the child's foot will be able to move properly with the natural feel of a shoe that bends. This will enable the child to dance more gracefully and confident.
Another thing to consider when looking for ballet shoes is sizing. When you buy regular shoes, you always buy a size that is bigger in anticipation that the feet will grow. Ballet shoes on the other hand don't work this way and you have buy one that fits snugly but still has room for the toes to remain flat.
You can check this by putting your finger around the top opening of the shoes. If there are any puckers or gaps, then the ballet shoe is too big. Tell your child to also walk and ask them if they are comfortable. Surely, you don't want your child's shoes to come off and fly in the air when he or she is dancing.
If the only pair of ballet shoes you find is drawstring, be sure to cut them to a reasonable length or have the instructor take care of it to prevent injuries from happening during practice.
Lastly, don't forget to compare the prices of ballet shoes before you buy them from the store. There are retailers that offer this in specialty shops and online so take your time looking at each one and then getting the most comfortable and durable style that money can buy.
